Ren and Shinji, preparing to transform

Kido Shinji was your average Japanese man: a bit on the clumsy side, clueless, but kind and well-meaning nonetheless. He had an apartment of his own, a part-time job that doubled as experience for a future he hopes to pursue in investigative journalism, a boss that pretty much let him do what he wanted, and co-workers that were easy to deal with. He had it good.

Fate, however, would not be so kind. While investigating the apartment of a missing person, Shinji discovered a deck of cards. He pulls out the first, a Seal card, and sees for the first time a monster of the Mirror World: Dragredder. He is soon followed by a mysterious duo who realize that he can see the monsters of the Mirror World too. The girl, Kanzaki Yui, approaches him and asks if he is a Masked Rider. Bewildered, Shinji has no answer for her, and the card deck drags him into the Mirror World before she can elaborate. The girl's companion, Akiyama Ren, transforms into the Masked Rider Knight and runs into the Mirror World to attack the spider-like monster chasing Shinji. When the spider monster is defeated, Dragredder attacks Shinji again and he and Ren escape outside the Mirror World before it can catch up to them. Eventually Shinji manages to contract Dragredder to himself and becomes the Masked Rider Ryuki.

Thrust into a new world he doesn't understand, Shinji naturally has a lot of questions he wants answered. Why is Yui the only non-Rider who can see the monsters of the Mirror World? Why must all the Masked Riders battle each other for a prize no one can really clarify? Why must there be only one left in the end? Why can't they all work together and defend the people of Earth from the attacks of the monsters of the Mirror World? Does he have what it takes to survive?
