(fyi: in Japanese, last name comes first)
Name: Ichijouji Ken
Alias: The Digimon Kaiser/Emperor
Age: 11 (Meimi: *whines* They don't LOOK that young!) (Ajora: They don't ACT that young either. What 11 year old kid carries a whip around?)

Crest: Kindness (Meimi: *hackcough* Kindness? Yeah, sure thing.)
Digimon: Leafmon (Baby), Minomon (Baby II), Wormmon (Child), Stingmon (Adult), Paildramon (Jogress Perfect with XV-mon), Imperial Dramon (Ultimate from the Jogress of Paildramon), Imperial Dramon Fighter Mode (Ultimate evolution from Imperial Dramon), Imperial Dramon Paladin Mode (another Ultimate evolution from Imperial Dramon) (Ajora: and each evolution is even uglier than the last *runs from rabid Wormmon fans*)
Japanese Seiyuu: Paku Romi
English Voice Actor: Derek Stephen Prince
Ken first shows up in the second season of Digimon as the new villain, the Digimon Kaiser, who is enslaving the Digital World at his leisure. He constructs dark towers/control spires, which prevents evolutions to Adult forms and above in their area of effect. Within the influence of the towers, black metal rings that look like collars, better known as dark rings, can be used to enslave the mind of any Digimon they're placed upon.
The good guys are sent out to fight him with their newly discovered Digimentals/Digieggs that allow Armor evolutions within the influence of the towers. The fight goes on for awhile, with the Kaiser creating the dark spiral which doesn't need a tower to work and can control Perfect level digimon. Unsatisfied with the results of the war so far, Ken starts putting together a digimon 'strong' enough to get rid of the pests. It ends up developing into a knockdown drag out fight where Ken starts losing it and Wormmon develops a backbone and gets himself killed. The Crest of Kindness shows up at this point(Ajora: and man does the Kindness symbol look fruity).
From there Ken does some soul searching about himself and his deceased brother, Osamu/Sam(Meimi: Ajora is a huge Osamu fan) (Ajora: And damn proud of it!). Eventually, he regains the newly resurrected Wormmon and starts cleaning up his mess in the Digital World. New enemies show up... some that are really creepy (Meimi & Ajora: DIE OIKAWA DIE!)... and Ken forms a friendship bond with Daisuke/Davis which helps them discover the Jogress form of evolution. In the meantime, there are a lot of hints at just how screwed up Ken actually is. (Meimi: Screwed up doesn't even begin to describe it.)
Something Ajora has noticed while browsing many Digimon sites and fics is the common misspelling of Kaiser as 'Kaizer'. When talking to one of many Kaiser fans she's found that many fans don't actually know what Kaiser means, so here's an explanation.
Kaiser is a title used for any of the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire (962-1806), of Austria (1806-1918), or of Germany (1871-1918). The word itself has its root in the Latin word 'caesar'. To understand the full implications of Ken's role as the Digimon Kaiser, one must realize what the Caesars of Rome did with their empire. They expanded their empire by conquest, either enslaved or offered citizenship of Rome to the conquered people, and sometimes used the slaves as entertainment (usually pitting one slave against the other in coliseums, or having a slave fight a ravenous beast). Now, does this bring to mind any episodes?
As the Kaiser, Ken is cruel, manipulative, cunning and vicious. As one of the Chosen Children/Digi-Destined, Ken is hesitant, shy, depressed, reclusive and very, very angsty.(Meimi: Angst! Yay!) It's not that hard to figure out why we like him. (Ajora: though his prettiness is an easy excuse)
Name: Takaishi Takeru
Age: 11 (season 2), 8 (season 1)
School: Odaiba Elementary - 5th Grade (season 2), Kawada Elementary - 2nd Grade (season 1)
Crest: Hope
Digimental/Digiegg: Hope
Digimon: Poyomon (Baby), Tokomon (Baby II), Patamon (Child), Angemon (Adult), Holy Angemon/Magna Angemon (Perfect), Seraphimon (Ultimate), Pegasusmon (Armored), Shakkoumon (Jogress Perfect with Ankylomon) (Ajora: It is my belief that Shakkoumon was meant to be Ultimatemaidmon but the name was changed at the last minute to keep Toei from getting sued)
Japanese Seiyuu: Yamamoto Taisuke (season 2), Konishi Hiroko (season 1)
English Voice Actor: Doug Erholtz (season 2), Wendee Lee (season 1)
During the first season Takeru is much like any other little kid, he's whiny, cute, dependent on the others to take care of him and easily hurt emotionally. He does end up saving everybody's bacon in two of the really big fights, though.(Meimi: Angemon can kick most people's asses) (Ajora: But Patamon still wins the cutest digimon award)
In the second season, Takeru has grown up a bit and is easier on the eye... even with the hat(Meimi: It's Gilligan!). He's best friends with Hikari/Kari (Meimi: Like we didn't see that one coming.) and the perfect foil to Daisuke/Davis's advances on Hikari. In the Digital World he acquires the Digimental/Digiegg of Hope and joins in the fight against Ken during the Kaiser story arc.
All throughout the war, Takeru is just basically there, getting picked on by Daisuke, picking on Daisuke, saving Hikari from the 'dark ocean', impressing Daisuke with Angemon and finally, picking a fight with Ken(Meimi: Go baby go!) (Ajora: I'm a bad Kaiser fan, I was cheering Takeru on...). During Daisuke's attempts to get the others to accept Ken into the ranks after Wormmon's death, Takeru is perhaps the most sympathetic out of the bunch (Meimi: Score!). Later on in the series, Takeru takes the sidelines most of the time with the others while Daisuke and Ken take most of the limelight. Eventually Takeru gains a Jogress with Iori/Cody, Shakkoumon (Meimi: Ultimatemaidmon with suck and blow action!).
While Takeru can often be seen as passive, he does have a very firm righteousness streak that shows up every now and then. The battle with Devimon left its mark on him, and it is because of that he believes that evil digimon must be vanquished without question.
Takeru is sweet, caring, understanding, cheerful and pretty much the angel of the series, the goody goody. With Ken basically shown as the child with the fallen angel/demon motif it's not hard to see why we like them as a couple.(Meimi: Ken likes angel food!)
