Butz spent most of his life following his father in his travels, for his mother had died of illness when he was three years of age and Dorgan could not bear to stay in the same town... yet three years before Butz's encounter with Lenna, Dorgan too died of illness. Though he is not a sociable person and prefers the rootless life of an adventurer to the constraints of urban life, he has a very strong sense of righteousness. Soon after Dorgan died, Butz encountered a chocobo that had strayed from its flock, and from then on travelled with that bird, whom he had named Boco.
